AUTO INSURANCE · BUYER’S GUIDE
How to read your auto insurance coverage
An auto policy combines separate protections. Read what each coverage pays for, its limit and any deductible before deciding whether a quote fits your needs. The monthly payment alone does not show what you would carry after an accident.
Read the coverage lines first
Liability generally addresses injuries or property damage you cause to other people. Collision and comprehensive address different kinds of damage to your vehicle. Medical payments, personal injury protection and uninsured or underinsured motorist options serve different purposes; requirements and availability vary by state.
Look for the named drivers and vehicles, the coverage period and the address where the car is kept. Ask about any excluded driver. The declarations page summarizes selections, while the policy and endorsements explain the terms.
Look for assumptions that could leave a gap
Do not treat “full coverage” as a promise that everything is included. Ask separately about rental reimbursement, roadside assistance and any work-related driving. Tell the insurer if you deliver goods, drive for an app or regularly use a car for business.
A vehicle-damage deductible is your share of a covered claim; it is not the same as a liability limit. Comprehensive and collision can have different deductibles. Use our focused coverage guide for examples rather than guessing from the names.
Get your information ready
Gather the details below before a quote conversation. Provide sensitive identification or payment information only through the insurer’s secure application or an approved agency process, not an ordinary website message.
- List the household drivers, vehicles, intended vehicle use and where each vehicle is normally kept.
- Have your current declarations page, vehicle identification numbers and any loan or lease insurance instructions available.
- Choose an intended start date and identify coverage questions you want answered before purchasing.
Confirm what you are buying
Ask for the total premium for the policy term, the payment schedule and any fees. For side-by-side shopping, use the existing switching checklist and hold coverage selections constant. Request confirmation that the policy is issued and effective; a quote or agency inquiry does not put coverage in force.
Questions for your agent
Should I choose only the minimum limits?
Minimum requirements are a starting point for a conversation, not a measure of every loss you could cause. Discuss your circumstances and the cost of higher limits before choosing.
Where do I start if I am replacing a car?
Use our newly purchased car guide and contact the insurer about the exact vehicle and timing. Do not assume a quote changes an existing policy.
