IDENTITY PROTECTION · UNDERSTAND THE PLAN

Identity theft protection: compare the services and benefits.

An identity protection plan can combine monitoring, help restoring your identity and insurance for specified expenses. These are different features. Compare what each actually does, who is eligible and what limits apply. Monitoring or a large advertised benefit should not be read as a promise to prevent every misuse or repay every loss.

What is monitored, and what happens after an alert?

Ask which credit bureaus, personal information or account activity the plan monitors. Find out how alerts arrive, what enrollment steps are needed and who responds. An alert gives you information to investigate; it does not establish that every suspicious event is fraud or that all fraud will be detected.

If comparing household plans, verify who is included and whether features differ for adults and children. Confirm the actual monitoring scope rather than assuming the same benefits apply to everyone named on the plan.

Separate assistance from insurance reimbursement.

Restoration assistance may help with notifications, disputes and the recovery process. Ask which tasks a specialist performs and which remain your responsibility. Availability of a service is different from eligibility for an insurance payment.

For any insurance benefit, request the applicable summary or certificate, covered-expense categories, exclusions, deductible and limits. Ask specifically how stolen funds and recovery expenses are treated; do not assume they are the same benefit. An advertised maximum is a ceiling subject to terms, not an automatic payout.

Know the free tools available to you.

The Federal Trade Commission explains that you can place credit freezes with the nationwide credit bureaus for free. A freeze restricts access to your credit report and can make it harder to open new credit in your name. It does not prevent every form of identity theft or replace monitoring your existing accounts.

A fraud alert works differently by telling businesses to verify your identity before issuing new credit. Review the FTC’s guidance to choose the appropriate step and understand how to lift a freeze when you legitimately apply for credit.

Choose the next step for your situation.

Our agency can help you explore GEICO’s identity protection program, serviced by Iris Powered by Generali. Services, insurance benefits and eligibility depend on the plan. The inquiry form is for general questions; never enter passwords, Social Security numbers or account details there.

If identity misuse is already suspected, use official recovery resources and contact the affected financial institution through a verified channel. Buying a new plan is not a substitute for responding to an existing incident, and coverage for earlier events should not be assumed.

Questions for your agent

  • Which monitoring and restoration services are included?
  • Who in my household qualifies for each feature?
  • Which expenses are insured, and which are excluded?
  • What enrollment steps and effective dates apply?

Sources and coverage details

Sources checked October 17, 2026. These educational resources explain general insurance concepts; another insurer’s features are not a promise of coverage available through this agency. Coverage, eligibility, limits, deductibles and exclusions depend on the policy, insurer and state. An inquiry does not start or change coverage.
