LIFE INSURANCE · START WITH THE PURPOSE
Life insurance: match the coverage to the responsibility.
Start a life insurance review with the people and responsibilities you want to support. Then discuss the amount, time period and premium you could maintain. A product name alone does not tell you whether a policy fits those needs or what an insurer will require before coverage begins.
What would you want the benefit to help manage?
Write down the income your household depends on and the responsibilities that would remain if you died. These might include a mortgage, childcare, other debts or future education expenses. Review savings and existing individual or workplace coverage alongside those needs.
This is a starting conversation, not a rule that everyone needs the same income multiple. Identify how long each responsibility is expected to last and revisit the estimate after major household changes.
How do term and permanent policies differ?
Term insurance provides coverage for a specified period, subject to the policy’s conditions. Ask what happens at the end, whether premiums are level for the selected period, and whether renewal or conversion is available and has deadlines.
Permanent policies are designed for longer-lasting coverage when required funding and other conditions are met. They may include cash value. Whole life and universal life are different designs; costs, guarantees and flexibility are not identical. Ask which values are guaranteed, what is illustrated, and what could cause additional payments or a lapse. Do not assume every type is available through every insurer.
What does the application require?
Eligibility and pricing can depend on information such as age, health and lifestyle. Medical questions, records or an examination may be required. An initial estimate is not a promise of acceptance or the final premium.
Use the insurer’s designated process for sensitive application information. Our public inquiry only needs contact details and a short description of what you want to discuss; do not put medical history, Social Security numbers or financial account information in that message.
Before you choose or replace coverage.
Review the beneficiaries, coverage amount, premium schedule and effective-date requirements. Ask about exclusions, riders and any surrender charges that apply. If replacing a policy, understand what benefits or terms you would give up and confirm new coverage before ending the old policy.
