Military auto insurance: moves and storage

A move, deployment or extended storage period can change how a vehicle is used. Review the actual arrangement with the insurer before reducing protection. Military eligibility or a discount does not replace the need to choose appropriate coverages.

Explain where the car and drivers will be

Tell the insurer where the vehicle will normally be kept, who will drive it and whether household members remain at a different address. A permanent move, temporary assignment and stored vehicle can require different conversations. Use accurate garaging and driver information rather than selecting an address only for price.

Ask how coverage should be coordinated when moving between states. Keep the current insurer informed and confirm any replacement policy’s effective date before canceling existing protection. Separate licensing, registration and installation requirements should be checked with the appropriate authority.

Review storage without assuming coverage can stop

A parked car can still be stolen or damaged by fire or weather. Comprehensive may protect against covered non-collision losses. If a spouse, friend or family member will drive the car, describe that use before asking to reduce driving-related protection.

A lender or lessor may require coverage even while the car is off the road. Ask the insurer which changes are available, what protection would be removed and what is needed before the car returns to use. Do not assume all insurers provide a policy-suspension option.

Prepare the conversation

Keep a short plan for each vehicle. If documentation is needed, ask how to provide it securely; an ordinary website inquiry is not the place for sensitive military orders or identification.

  • Identify the expected move or storage dates, vehicle location and any continuing drivers.
  • Have current policy selections and lender or lease insurance requirements available.
  • Ask about military-related eligibility and what documents are needed, without assuming a particular discount or price.

Confirm the next change before driving

Before returning a stored vehicle to the road, confirm the required protection is effective and obtain updated documents. If plans change, contact the insurer rather than assuming a previous request covers the new arrangement.

For an overseas assignment, ask about coverage specific to the destination. A domestic policy should not be assumed to apply worldwide. Keith Roberts’s team can help with questions about available auto coverage in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma; an inquiry does not make a policy change.

Questions for your agent

Does deployment automatically qualify for a discount?

No automatic eligibility should be assumed. Ask about the insurer’s current military and deployment programs, state availability and documentation requirements.

Is canceling the cheapest way to store my car?

Compare the remaining risks, lender obligations and consequences of a lapse before deciding. Ask for the specific coverage choices and prices rather than focusing only on the next payment.

Sources and coverage details

Sources checked October 17, 2026. These educational resources explain general insurance concepts; another insurer’s features are not a promise of coverage available through this agency. Coverage, eligibility, limits, deductibles and exclusions depend on the policy, insurer and state. An inquiry does not start or change coverage.
