PERSONAL LIABILITY · KNOW THE CONNECTIONS
Umbrella insurance: questions before you add another layer.
Umbrella insurance can add liability protection above eligible underlying policies. The useful first step is checking how that extra layer connects to your auto, home or renters coverage. Compare those requirements and exclusions alongside the umbrella premium, rather than treating every policy with the same limit as interchangeable.
Which policies must stay underneath it?
An umbrella insurer may require particular auto and property liability limits. Bring the declarations pages for the policies you want reviewed, including any boat or rental property coverage. Ask which policies and household members must be listed and whether different insurers are acceptable.
If raising an underlying limit is required, include that additional premium in the comparison. Ask what happens if an underlying policy is canceled or its limits change. The umbrella is not permission to let required coverage lapse.
What kind of liability would it address?
Personal umbrella coverage generally concerns injuries to other people or damage to their property for which an insured is liable. Some policies also address specified personal-injury claims, such as libel or slander. Ask how legal defense is handled and whether defense expenses reduce the available limit.
It is not a repair fund for your own house or vehicle. Business activities, intentional acts and other exclusions need separate discussion. Describe your actual activities so the agent can explain the relevant terms rather than assume coverage from a broad product description.
Prepare a household and property review.
A useful review goes beyond an asset total. Note the people, vehicles and properties connected to your household, then identify changes since your last insurance review. Do not send financial statements or complete policy documents through the public message box.
- Current liability limits and renewal dates.
- Drivers and vehicles, including a newly licensed driver.
- Homes, rentals and recreational vehicles to discuss.
- Any business, rental or other activity the insurer should evaluate.
Get the proposed arrangement in writing.
Ask for the umbrella limit, underlying requirements, exclusions and proposed effective date in one summary. Compare the combined cost and responsibilities, not only the additional policy’s price. A quote or inquiry does not put coverage in force.
