BOAT INSURANCE · BUYER’S GUIDE
Boat insurance questions before you launch
A boat policy should match the boat, its value, the waters you use and the people operating it. Review damage to the watercraft separately from liability and on-water assistance. A marina requirement is only one part of that decision.
Separate the boat from the other exposures
Liability may help when you cause covered injuries or property damage to another person. Physical damage coverage may address losses to your boat from a collision, theft, fire or weather, depending on the policy. Ask how deductibles apply to each cause.
Equipment, fishing gear and personal items may have separate limits. Make clear whether a quoted value includes the motor and permanently installed equipment. List the trailer rather than assuming it is automatically insured wherever it is parked.
Prepare the details for your quote
Keep a short equipment list with purchase information and photographs when available. This helps explain the boat being insured; it does not establish the amount payable for a future claim.
- Gather hull identification, year, make, model, length, engine information and ownership details.
- Identify regular operators, boating experience, safety courses, storage and intended waters.
- List the motor, trailer, electronics and portable gear; note any financing or marina requirements.
Ask how a loss would be handled
Ask whether settlement is based on an agreed value or actual cash value and how depreciation, deductibles and damaged equipment are treated. Clarify storm-related conditions, storage responsibilities and maintenance exclusions.
On-water towing and wreckage removal address different situations. Ask what assistance is available after a breakdown and what a covered sinking or fuel spill would involve. Do not assume a roadside plan for your car provides the same help on the water.
Questions for your agent
Can I rely on my homeowners policy?
Home insurance may have limited boat-related protection, often subject to boat size, horsepower or other conditions. Compare its actual terms before deciding a separate boat policy is unnecessary.
Does asking for a quote cover tomorrow’s launch?
No. Confirm the insurer, covered watercraft, effective date and issued documents before relying on protection. A website inquiry does not bind coverage.

Sources and coverage details
Sources checked October 17, 2026. These educational resources explain general insurance concepts; another insurer’s features are not a promise of coverage available through this agency. Coverage, eligibility, limits, deductibles and exclusions depend on the policy, insurer and state. An inquiry does not start or change coverage.
