HOME INSURANCE · UNDERSTAND YOUR DEDUCTIBLE

Home insurance deductible calculator.

Turn a percentage deductible into dollars using the coverage amount specified in your policy. Compare that result with an optional flat deductible, then bring the numbers to your coverage conversation.

Calculate your percentage deductible

Use the amount your policy applies the percentage to, often the dwelling coverage limit. This calculation shows deductible arithmetic, not a premium, coverage recommendation or claim payment.

Required. Use the policy’s calculation base, not the repair bill. Dollars and commas are accepted.

Required. Enter 2 for 2%, or 0.5 for 0.5%. Use the percentage listed for the coverage you are reviewing.

For a useful comparison, check that both amounts apply to the same type of covered loss.

The calculator does not send or store the amounts you enter.

Find the right figures before comparing

Read the declarations page and any applicable deductible endorsement. Confirm the covered event, the percentage and the insured amount used as its base. A wind or hail deductible can differ from the amount for other covered losses. A separate flood policy can have separate deductibles.

Hypothetical example: a 2% deductible based on $300,000 in dwelling coverage equals $6,000. It is not 2% of the repair estimate. Compared with a $2,500 flat deductible for the same event, the percentage amount is $3,500 higher. This is a calculation example, not an available policy offer.

The Texas Department of Insurance recommends translating percentage deductibles into dollars and considering what you could afford after a loss. Use our deductible comparison worksheet to review the deductible alongside the premium and other policy terms.

Common deductible questions

Which coverage amount should I enter?

Enter the amount named as the percentage calculation base in your policy. Often this is the dwelling coverage limit, but confirm the wording. Do not substitute the purchase price, mortgage balance or repair estimate unless the policy actually specifies that basis.

Does the result tell me what insurance will pay?

No. It calculates the percentage amount only. Claim payment depends on whether the loss is covered and on policy limits, exclusions, settlement terms and other applicable conditions. Your out-of-pocket expenses can extend beyond a deductible.

Does one deductible apply to every claim?

Not necessarily. GEICO explains that wind, hail or other events may have separate deductibles. Some policy coverages may not have a deductible. Ask which provision applies to the event you are reviewing.

Can I use this to choose a lower premium?

The calculator does not estimate premiums. Ask your agent for actual quotes with available deductible options and comparable coverage. Review the premium difference alongside the amount you could reasonably handle after a loss.
