Motorcycle and ATV insurance questions

A motorcycle, ATV and side-by-side can need different coverage even when they share a garage. Start by explaining exactly what you own, who operates it and where it is used. Then review protection for other people, the vehicle and your riding equipment.

Describe the riding, not just the vehicle

Explain whether the vehicle is used for commuting, recreation, trail riding or work. Ask about passengers, other household riders and any use at organized events. Coverage for a street motorcycle should not be assumed to cover a separate off-road vehicle.

For an ATV or UTV, check the requirements of the state, trail or property where you ride. Carrying insurance does not by itself establish permission to use a vehicle on a public road.

Separate liability, vehicle damage and gear

Liability may address injuries or property damage you cause to others. Collision generally concerns impact damage to the insured vehicle; comprehensive may address theft, fire or weather damage. Ask about medical and uninsured-motorist options for your circumstances rather than assuming they match your car policy.

List modifications and accessories separately. A custom exhaust, upgraded suspension, protective clothing and items stored on the vehicle may be treated differently. Ask what is included, what requires an added option, and which limits or deductibles apply.

Prepare a useful quote request

Keep receipts or a simple list for changes to the original vehicle. The point is to describe what needs protection, not to assume the purchase price of every accessory will be paid after a loss.

  • Gather the year, make, model, vehicle identification number and ownership or financing details.
  • List riders, riding experience, completed safety courses and where the vehicle is normally stored.
  • Identify custom parts, riding gear, a transport trailer and any planned use outside your home state.

Review storage before changing coverage

Theft, fire and weather losses can happen while a vehicle is parked. Ask what protection remains during the off-season and whether a lender has requirements. Confirm any change with the insurer before riding again; a request through this website does not change a policy.

Questions for your agent

Does my home policy cover my ATV everywhere?

Do not assume it does. Home policies can limit vehicle coverage by location, use and type. Ask about a separate off-road policy for the places you actually ride.

Is mechanical wear covered?

Routine wear and maintenance generally are not covered by ordinary vehicle-damage coverage. Ask about the cause of damage and any separate protection instead of assuming an engine repair qualifies.

Sources and coverage details

Sources checked October 17, 2026. These educational resources explain general insurance concepts; another insurer’s features are not a promise of coverage available through this agency. Coverage, eligibility, limits, deductibles and exclusions depend on the policy, insurer and state. An inquiry does not start or change coverage.
