Rental car insurance: what to check before picking up the keys

Your personal auto policy may extend to a rental car, but an insurance card alone does not answer every rental question. Confirm the vehicle, drivers, trip and protections before accepting or declining the rental company’s options. Different contracts can leave different costs with you.

Separate the car, other people and the rental bill

Damage to the rental vehicle is a different question from injuries or damage you cause to someone else. Comprehensive and collision may extend from your auto policy to an eligible rental; liability addresses your responsibility to others. Verify the applicable limits and deductibles instead of assuming every coverage transfers.

Rental reimbursement is another coverage entirely. It may help pay the rental expense while your insured vehicle is unavailable after a covered loss, subject to its terms. Having that benefit does not settle who pays if you damage the rental car.

Compare the waiver with your card benefits

A collision damage waiver or loss damage waiver—CDW or LDW—is generally a contractual waiver from the rental company rather than an auto insurance policy. Read what responsibility it removes and what conditions remain. Ask about theft, damage, loss-of-use charges while the car cannot be rented, and other fees.

Credit-card rental protection is not identical across cards. Get the current benefit guide from the benefits administrator. Confirm payment and reservation requirements, whether you must decline the rental company’s waiver, eligible vehicles, rental length and countries. Ask whether the benefit pays first or after other insurance. Vehicle-damage protection generally does not supply liability coverage.

Describe the actual trip

Tell the insurer if this is business travel, a long rental, an unusual vehicle or a peer-to-peer car-sharing booking. Personal-use rental guidance may not apply. For work trips, also ask your employer which arrangement and protection to use.

For travel outside the United States, confirm the destination and any border crossings with both the insurer and rental company. Do not assume domestic coverage or a credit-card benefit satisfies local liability requirements. A rental company may also restrict where its vehicle can be driven.

Use this before-pickup checklist

Keep the answers with your reservation so you can compare each option without relying on a rushed conversation at the counter.

  • Write down the rental dates, pickup country, planned destinations, vehicle category and every intended driver.
  • Ask your insurer which liability and vehicle-damage protections apply, with the relevant deductible and limits.
  • Ask the rental company which protections are already included, what optional products add and which charges can remain yours.
  • Verify the credit-card benefit’s activation steps, exclusions, claim deadlines and required documents.
  • Confirm every driver is authorized under the rental agreement; an unapproved driver can jeopardize protection.
  • Save the agreement and pre-rental condition photos, and keep the rental company’s and insurer’s reporting contacts accessible.

Resolve the gaps before departure

If you do not own a car or lack comprehensive or collision, say so when asking for advice. That changes the review; a credit card should not be treated as a complete substitute for liability protection.

Our team can help you review your personal auto questions. The rental company and card administrator must confirm their own contract terms. A website inquiry does not amend your auto policy or authorize a rental agreement.

Questions for your agent

  • What would I still owe after a covered rental-car loss?
  • Which contract responds first, and whom should I contact after damage?
  • Does my planned vehicle, driver or trip fall outside the protection being offered?

Sources and coverage details

Sources checked October 17, 2026. These educational resources explain general insurance concepts; another insurer’s features are not a promise of coverage available through this agency. Coverage, eligibility, limits, deductibles and exclusions depend on the policy, insurer and state. An inquiry does not start or change coverage.
