RV INSURANCE · BUYER’S GUIDE

RV insurance for trips and full-time living

RV coverage should reflect how the vehicle is used: occasional weekends, longer trips or a full-time home. A motorhome and a towable trailer do not have identical insurance needs. Describe both your RV and your travel plans before choosing.

Identify the RV and your living arrangement

Explain whether you drive a motorhome or pull a travel trailer, fifth wheel or camper. For a trailer, ask how the towing vehicle’s policy and the trailer’s protection work together. Do not assume protection for one automatically pays for damage to the other.

Tell the insurer if the RV is your main residence, how often you use it, and where you store it. Full-time living can require different liability options from occasional camping. Describe any rental or business use before assuming it is eligible.

Review losses on the road and at the campsite

Collision and comprehensive may help with covered vehicle damage, subject to policy terms and deductibles. Personal belongings coverage is a separate question: make an inventory of electronics, clothing and equipment that travel with you.

Ask about liability while parked and using the RV as a temporary residence. Also ask whether emergency expense coverage helps with lodging or transportation after a covered loss interrupts a trip. Eligibility, distances, limits and covered causes can vary.

Bring details beyond the model name

A useful conversation separates the RV itself from what is inside it and from the places you will use it. Keep sensitive application information for the insurer’s secure process.

  • Have the year, make, model, identification number, purchase details and lender instructions ready.
  • Describe storage, annual use, full-time occupancy, modifications and equipment carried inside.
  • Ask how the policy values a total loss and whether separate deductibles apply to particular causes.

Ask about towing and maintenance separately

A large RV may require specialized roadside help. Check towing limits and what happens to a trailer, passengers or personal belongings after a breakdown. A breakdown is not automatically a covered damage claim. Ask about roof, water intrusion, pest and wear-related exclusions and any optional protection before relying on a sales label.

Questions for your agent

Does my auto policy cover everything while I tow?

Not necessarily. Review liability while towing and physical damage to the trailer as separate questions, using both policies and the actual equipment involved.

Should I cancel while the RV is stored?

Consider remaining theft and weather exposure, financing requirements and any planned use. Ask the insurer what changes are available and confirm coverage before the next trip.

Sources and coverage details

Coverage, eligibility, limits, deductibles and exclusions depend on the policy, insurer and state. An inquiry does not start or change coverage.
